Lady Bug Beetles

November 30th, 2010

Beneficial insects are a great way to control pest problems for indoor and outdoor gardens.  In particular, Lady Bug beetles are one of the best to consider as they eat most soft body insects including mites, aphids, thrips, white flies and many others.  One question that we are asked often is how to keep Lady Bug beetles that are released into a garden from flying directly into the lights.

Lady Bugs will fly away from plants for two main reasons, if either their food or water supply is depleted they will take wing.  First, give Lady Bugs a water supply by misting your plants down with plain water.  And second, a neat way to keep them from flying away, is to lightly mist the Lady Bugs with a water and soda mixture before you release them into your garden.  We recommend a 3 to 1 ratio of water to soda.  This mixture will make their wings sticky and unable to open all the way, preventing them from flying.  After misting, place the Lady Bugs directly on the infected plants and they will have no choice but to take care of your pest problem.

Use these tricks with beneficial insects and you will be able to get rid of your pest problem quickly and naturally without the use of chemical pesticides.  And remember, never use pesticides with beneficial insects; you don’t want to kill off the beneficials before they do their job!

New Fox Farm products are coming!

October 7th, 2010

One of our favorite nutrient companies, Fox Farm, is releasing a trio of cool new products later this month.  The Fox Farm brand has been one of our best selling and performing lines for over 10 years.  The three new products will help to round out their existing line of products.  The new line is called Bush Doctor and the products are called Kangaroots, Microbe Brew, and Sledgehammer.

Some of you older customers will remember Sledgehammer was on Fox Farm’s original feeding schedule.  The way the story goes was that Fox Farm could not get it registered years ago so they just dropped it.  Well now it is registered and ready to go.  Basically, Sledgehammer is a nutrient rinsing solution to remove excess fertilizer build up.  This is a great product when you add two tablespoons of fertilizer when the directions called for two teaspoons.  It is also helpful at the end of your plant’s production when you want to draw out the stored up fertilizer in the plant or soil to get a cleaner taste to you finish product.

The Microbe Brew is specially formulated to help plants achieve optimum microbial habitats at the root zone, bla, bla, bla…….  In a nut shell, by adding this to your nutrient feed schedule it will insure that your root system stays healthy, grows outward and insure good nutrient uptake for the plants.  The roots are the starting block for a healthy plant.  If your roots are strong and healthy then your plants will be strong and healthy.  The activity that happens in your root zone area is just as important as what happens above the soil.

Lastly is the Kangaroots.  This is a cool product that blasts your roots to encourage mass development.  The more roots that you have and the larger that they are the more nutrients that the plant can take in thus resulting in bigger and stronger plants!  We will have updated feeding schedules with these new products that can be used in conjunction with the original Fox Farm products.  All of these new products will be available in Quart and Gallon sizes and can be used with soil or hydroponics.  Remember, Fox Farm is a small, family-run business dedicated to producing the finest quality garden products available anywhere just like Harry’s!

Bloombastic – The Bling Bling For Your Plants

August 24th, 2010

We were wondering if Bloombastic was really all that it was talked up to what it claims to be.  What better way than to test it out ourselves.  So when used in conjunction with our regular fertilizer program on our tomato plants at Hydroharrys we noticed a 40% increase in flower sites and tomato size production.  With the testing done it can be said that Bloombastic is the most complete Bloom Stimulator on the market today.  This one bottle wonder will transform your garden by elevating it’s overall quality and yield.  Bloombastic is a highly concentrated pure mineral PK boost as well as a cutting edge plant metabolic booster.

Used by millions of gardeners worldwide, Bloombastic is a booster, accelerator, top hardener, quality improver and essential oils increasing product.  Bloombastic is an organic based product containing sea kelp and clay minerals.  Bloombastic is a European product formulated in Holland and reflects an NPK of (0-14-15).  Being an organic based product, we like that this can be used safely with all types of fertilizers and that we do not need to use 4 or 5 blooming additive products at one time saving us a lot of money.

Bloombastic is engineered to stimulate enzymatice processes on several levels increasing your plant’s resistance to stress factors sun as: heat, dry air, high light intensity, disease and nutrient deficiencies.  Bloombastic will elevate the performance of ANY brand of base nutrient transforming you into a Master Gardener.

Start using Bloombastic when flower buds first appear, mixing approximately 2 ml per gallon of nutrient solution.  This will usually occur during the last 4 to 6 weeks of the blooming and ripening stages of plant growth.  Typically, you will see results within the first 2 – 4 days.  As you increase Bloombastic’s dosage up to a maximum of 4 ml per gallon in the last weeks of blooming, you will see an even more dramatic effect from the PK boost and when the metabolic enhancers kick in.

Bloombastic can be used with all growing media and in combination with all feeding methods.  Keep using your base nutrients as normal while you add Bloombastic during the flowering cycle.  We found that less is more with Bloombastic keeping the dosage at 2 ml per gallon produced enough tomatoes to have many left over to give our customers on the counter our store.  We would highly recommend this product to any serious grower that wants to push the flowering and fruiting cycle to the limits.  In our next go around with Bloombastic, we plan our feeding our squash that we have started for our new grow room at our Warren store.  Be sure to stop by and check out the progress of the new state-of-the art grow area.

Bloombastic Key Points:
